Boat Trailer Repairs & Servicing

Bearings, brakes, lights, rollers, springs and WOF repairs.

The trailer gets dunked in saltwater every single trip and then completely ignored for the rest of the year. It is the most neglected part of most people's setup and the reason so many of them end up parked on the side of the motorway.

What’s included

  • Wheel bearing inspection, repack and replacement
  • Bearing buddies and seals
  • Brake inspection, adjustment and overhaul (override and electric)
  • Trailer lights, wiring looms and plugs
  • Roller, skid and bunk replacement
  • Winch, strap and safety chain replacement
  • Spring, axle and suspension repairs
  • Rust treatment and repairs to the frame
  • Pre-WOF checks and repairs

Bearings are the number one failure

Hot bearings hit cold seawater at the ramp and it pulls water straight past the seal. Do that enough times without repacking them and the grease turns into a grey emulsion that protects nothing. Then it lets go at open road speed with a boat on the back.

We repack or replace bearings, fit new seals, and check the hubs for scoring and heat damage while the wheels are off. If you launch in saltwater regularly, this wants doing every year.

Brakes, lights and WOF

Trailer brakes rot from the inside out and override couplings seize up. Lights fail because the earth path through a rusty frame gives up. Both are common WOF failures and both are easy enough to fix properly.

We can go through the trailer before its warrant so you are not making a second trip, and fix anything that would have failed.

Rollers, skids and frame

Perished rollers and worn skids mark the hull and make launching and retrieving harder than it should be. Frame rust usually starts where water sits, inside the chassis rails and around the welds. Caught early it is a repair. Left long enough it is a new trailer.

If you are not sure whether yours is still sound, bring it in and we will give you an honest answer.

Questions

Trailer Repairs: common questions

How often should trailer bearings be serviced?

Once a year if you launch in saltwater, or straight away if a hub is running hot, making noise or has play in the wheel. It is saltwater that kills bearings, not the kilometres.

Can you repair the trailer while you service the boat?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. The boat turns up on the trailer anyway, so both get sorted in the same visit.

Do you do trailer WOF repairs?

We do pre-WOF checks and the repairs needed to pass: brakes, lights, bearings, couplings, chains and rust. We can tell you what is going to fail before you take it in.

My trailer lights keep failing. Why?

Usually a corroded earth or a waterlogged loom rather than the bulbs. Trailer wiring that gets submerged has a rough life. A new loom and sealed LED lamps is the permanent fix.

Getting started

One workshop for the whole boat

Engines, electronics, trailers, grooming and storage all happen in the same place, so jobs can be combined into one visit instead of three. Tell us what the boat is doing and we will tell you what it needs.
